Independence League News Article | | | Monday, July 6th, 1964: 5-Hit Blitz by San Diego's Ryan Mike Ryan told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard."
Well, that's just what Ryan of the San Diego Padres did against the Columbus Jets. He went to the plate 5 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, much to the chagrin of the Jets, who suffered a 13-5 defeat.
"Not much that I can say," offered the losing manager, "he just hammered the heck out of us."
M. Ryan tripled in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off J. Unknown in the 5th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off A. Koch in the 9th.
In the 1964 season Ryan is batting .245 with 74 hits and 9 home runs. He has scored 45 times and batted in 33. | |
