Saturday, May 1st, 1965: AL's Top Hitter Selected
When Dick Allen stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the American Batter of the Month award.

The young Washington third baseman posted a .417 batting average with 4 home runs, 15 RBIs and scored 20 runs. Allen also worked pitchers for 9 walks to post a .476 on-base percentage.

It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the American, but last week Dick Allen of the Washington Senators reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week.

Allen rocked opposing pitching for a .469 average (15-32), 2 home runs and 6 RBIs to come away with the award.

The Senators today announced that they have come to terms with Jim Bunning, a 33-year-old starting pitcher they've been scouting for a while.

Bunning will earn $450,000 a year over 3 years and is expected to play a key role with the club.

In his career Bunning has gone 129-108 with an ERA of 3.64, picking up 1562 strikeouts in 2097.1 innings pitched.
